Loving a Wretched Whore

In the Old Testament, there is a poignant story that illustrates God's steadfast love. It centers around Hosea, a prophet, who received a peculiar directive to marry Gomer, a prostitute. This seemed like an odd request, but Hosea agreed to it.

Initially, the couple experienced the beauty of marital bliss. They started a family and shared a genuine bond. However, over time, things began to change. Gradually, Gomer's heart grew cold towards her husband.

Her icy touch and prolonged absences did not go unnoticed. Sadly, the sacred covenant of marriage was broken as Gomer wandered, seeking solace in the arms of others. She dishonored Hosea, giving birth to the children of other men.

As Gomer's shameful actions came to light, she fled from home. Amid this debacle, God whispered to Hosea, urging him not to abandon her. The Lord said:

"Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods" (Hosea 3:1).

Determined to find his estranged wife, Hosea eventually located her in a squalid slave market, a mere shadow of her former self. Undeterred by Gomer's outward appearance, Hosea resolved to redeem her at great personal cost.

“I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and about a homer and a lethek of barley. Then I told her, 'You are to live with me many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with any man, and I will behave the same way toward you’” (Hosea 3:2-3).

In a remarkable turn of events, this unfaithful woman was restored to her husband's side and welcomed back into his home as a beloved bride.

This poignant story is a prophetic picture of the covenantal love of God. Despite humanity's unfaithfulness and deceit, God is still pursuing us. His love is truly unfathomable.
